Recognised Scottish Clans

Chiefs and Commanders of Scottish Clans

The Saltire, the Scottish National Flag, officially used to define Scotland since 1385

As of March 2021, below is both the list of Chiefs, recognised by the Lord Lyon and the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs and Clan Commanders commissioned by the Lord Lyon to head an armigerous clan until a Chief is Confirmed.

*/**Dictates, although Chiefs of Clan Branches in their own right, they fall under a High Chief, who is Chief of the whole clan. Only two cases come to mind: *Clan Donald (Macdonald) and **Clan Leod (Macleod). The Chiefs of these clan branches, although recognised as Chiefs,  are the closest thing Scottish clans comes to having any Chieftains.

* by the Chief’s name denotes a female chief, rather than male. This clearly shows that the Chiefly line being passed down the female line rarther than just the male line is legally accepted in Scotland, as it should be.

In this video showing the progression of Scottish Clans through the ages, Carruthers lands stay pretty static and although not as large as some, they are not considered small either.
